This poor guy was found electrocuted in the middle of Manuel Antonio. Thankfully someone witnessed it happen and called us over to come help him out. His burns are not too bad so we are very hopeful that he can be released after a short recovery time.
While treating this new patient, who we were originally calling Sean Paul, we discovered that he is actually a wild sloth that we used to track named Percy! While looking through old photos this new patient had a resemblance to the very first wild two-fingered sloth that the Sloth Institute had ever collared. We were only able to track him for a year and had not seen him since. On a closer look it was seen that he had a bare line around his neck as if he had worn a collar before.
The first time we met Percy he had fallen right in front of one of our workers while he was out tracking another sloth. Typically sloths fall if they are in a fight with another sloth. Percy is probably around 4 or 5 years old now and it is a nice discovery to see him again.
Thankfully his burns from his recent injuries are not too severe so he should make a full recovery but we will have to relocate him because he is no longer safe in his territory. While it’s nice to see Percy again it is a sad reminder of what all of the sloths who live near humans are in danger of experiencing.
Be sure to stay tuned and we will keep you updated on Percy’s recovery!
