Dra. Ana Maria Villada

Head Veterinarian and Conservation Medicine Research Manager
Ana has worked with The Sloth Institute since 2022. She is not only in charge of the health of all of the sloths in our care but she is also in charge of our Conservation Medicine Research department. Ana is very skilled in the clinical management of sloths including surgery as well as supervising our various research projects.

Ana's Biography

Ana is originally from Mexico where she graduated in Veterinary Medicine at La Universidad de Guadalajara in 2011.  After graduating she obtained her Masters in Conservation Medicine from Murdoch University in Australia in 2017.  Having always worked as a wildlife vet, she has specialized in sloths since moving to Costa Rica in 2017 and has been working with The Sloth Institute since 2022.  Ana is currently obtaining her PhD in Conservation Medicine from the University of Andres Bello in Chile where she is studying, you guessed it….SLOTHS!

Why I love sloths

I love mystical understudied animals.  But after working with sloths I love the very clear different personalities that they have and how adaptable they are to human encroachment of their habitats.  They have been here since the late Eocene and they are here to stay!
